Ethnocentricity

Hoe does ethnocentricity cause conflict?

Ethnocentricity is caused because ones judgment based on their culture gets in the way they view another culture. In the movie the First Australians, the British colonists accused the Aboriginals of being savage and barbaric, because of their lack of clothes. The british didn't accept the Aboriginals culture because science the Aboriginals dont act, live and dress like them then they should not be accepted and be treated like animals. Never the less the Aboriginals were ethnocentric towards the British but less because, they believe that to accept other people regardless of their differences unlike the british. As a society the Aboriginals are closer and more open with each other. This made them think the British were strange because they were not close to each other as the Aboriginals were. During this period the British were one of the countries to explore and claim land no matter the cause. When the British claimed the Aboriginals land to be theirs the Aboriginals were in shock. Both societies judged each other through their own perspective according to the culture which caused conflict to erupt between both societies. The British felt that they has more power and that they were more superior than the Aboriginals and they proceeded to take over by force.

Duet Caesar Project Reflection

I will be doing a duet of the play Julius Caesar written by William Shakespeare with my partner, Kabir Peshawaria. In this duet, Decius is trying to persuade Caesar to come to the senate with him. Caesar does not want to go because Calpurnia has foreboded that something bad will happen to him should he go, but Decius is trying to convince him otherwise because it is part of the conspiracy plan.

The significance of this passage is that the whole conspiracy plot, and Caesar's life, depends on his decision to go, or to not go, to the capitol. The conspiracy wouldn't have taken place, and Caesar wouldn't have died, if he had obeyed Calpurnia and stayed at home. This scene also shows how Caesar can be easily pulled into things and it also shows a good of example of his private vs. public self.

This takes place in Act 2 Scene 2, lines 65-107. And is written as follows.

CAESAR: Shall Caesar send a lie?
Have I in conquest stretch'd mind arm so far,
To be afeard to tell greybeards the truth?
Decius, go tell them Caesar will not come.

DECIUS: Most mighty Caesar, let me know some cause,
Lest I be laugh'd at when I tell them so.

CAESAR: The cause is at my will: I will not come;
That is enough to satisfy the Senate.
But for your private satisfation,
Because I love you, I will let you know:
Calpurnia here, my wife, stays me at home.
She dreamt tonight she saw my statue,
Which like a fountain with an hundred spouts
Did run pure blood; and many lusty Romans
Came smiling, and did bathe their hands in it.
And these does she apply for warnings and portents
And evils imminent; and on her knee
Hath begg'd that I will stay at home today.

DECIUS: This dream is all amiss interpreted;
It was a vision fair and fortunate:
Your statue sputing blood in many pipes,
In which so many smiling Romans bath'd,
Signifies that from your great Rome shall suck
Reviving blood, and that great men shall press
For tintures, stains, relics, and cognizance.
This by Calpurnia's dream is signified.

CAESAR: And this way have you well expounded it.

DECIUS: I have, when you have heard what I can say:
And know it now. The Senate have concluded
To give this day a crown to mighty Caesar.
If you shall send them word you will not come,
Their minds may change. Besides, it were a mock
Apt to be render'd, for some one to say,
'Break up the Senate till another time,
When Caesar's wife shall meet with better dreams.'
If Caesar hide himself, shall they not whisper,
'Lo, Caesar is afraid'?
Pardon em, Caesar; for my dear dear love
To your proceeding bids me tell you this,
And reason to my love is liable.

Caesar: How foolish do your fears seem now, Calpurnia!
I am ashamed I did yield to them.
Give me my robe, for I will go.

My Learner Profile

In class I found out my learner profile, I am a Logic thinker with an A learner profile.

I think I learn best when I’m alone with no background noise at all. I learn best when there is not so much pressure because I think I have all the time I need to finish my work. When I am under pressure the ideas don’t come as fast and I rush the work without double-checking it. I need to be given precise instructions in order for me to pass or do well on the assignment. I always tend to not be sure what to do because the instructions were too simple in my perspective, so I always tend to ask. When I am assigned a project I always try to focus on the due date, if it is after two weeks I will usually do it on the second week and not the first. Strategies that help me learn better is an enjoyable teacher and one who likes to joke around other than having me sitting down on the same chair for a whole class period.

I want the teachers to know that I enjoy sitting in the middle or the front of class. I focus better without my friends. However if I am assigned to sit next to my friend I will try and work harder because the way I can make the teacher have me sit next to my friend more often. I often like to joke in class because I think one joke can make a class a lot more enjoyable. I also want teacher to know that I have to move every once in a while in class because it gets me more focused and livelier. When I sit in one chair for a while I will usually change my posture and start getting tired. If I seem to hand in a project in a different style its because of the different learning style, I’ve only been to one school before ISKL but the learning style is completely different, it could be because ISKL teaches with and American system and my old school would teach in a British system.

"The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp"

"The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp" is an oil painting by Rembrandt in 1632. Rembrandt's painting mirrors the secularist approach to learning during the Renaissance. Secularism is a way of thinking in a non-religious way. This painting was non-religious in subject matter. The people in the Renaissance started to inquire about the world around them. Instead of people accepting that God made everything, they started to look at the Ancient Greek and Roman studies to find other pieces of knowledge such as medicine. This painting shows the secularist approach to learning during the Renaissance because its showing the growth of scientific knowledge. It shows a group of medical specialists dissecting a body of a burglar who has "a cheap soul." The men were dissecting the arm to see how the muscles of the arms form and work. This shows a secularist approach because people started to discover by themselves other than accepting that fact that God made everything. This painting shows interest in the human body but other paintings mirror many other topics and facts that came alive during the Renaissance.

Driving Forces of the Renaissance

I believe that the driving forces of the renaissance was trade and banking because, when trade and banking was introduced people began to have more connection and it brought more knowledge. When someone trades with someone the person could experiment the item the other person traded.

This I Belive

During the past years I haven’t been focusing on my Homework and school. But I also have been determined to do better at the end of the school year. In every thing I usually do better at the end, even in sports, all I need is a person to encourage me and not pressure me. In football practice I used to be lazy and not in the mood of playing, but one day they chose the first team to go to a major tournament and I wasn’t in it. After that I started becoming into football and I went to every practice and worked my hardest, the good thing is that it was only the beginning of the year and I had a lot of time to improve.
I tried to do anything to get my self on the first team. During the end of the year there was a very major tournament in Sweden this was when they select the major team. I checked my e-mail and my name was on the list I was very happy I guess working hard is worth it. The bad thing was I couldn’t go to that tournament, but the good thing is that I knew I was determined and selected for the first team. This was only football. In school, it was the day when we receive our report cards for the second Trimester. I looked at my grades carefully and saw that I had worse grades than the first Trimester even PE.
I talked with my dad about my grades and I really wanted to improve, my dad encouraged me to do better he told me he would give me a good thing and he told me to choose what I wanted. When he sees that I’m determined to do better and when I start focusing he would start thinking of me as a man. I wanted to achieve my goal and choose something to get from my dad. I started focusing I started off with B’s and two C’s. My dad said he would only allow one C and the rest B or higher. Even though it was a little late in the Trimester I wanted to improve and achieve my new goal, since it was the end of the school year I didn’t have much time to achieve my second goal, which was to get only one C, and the rest higher, as Barack Obama said, “impossible is nothing”. It was very hard since it was the last week of school I was already on vacation mode, which was a problem for me, it takes me a while to switch from vacation mode to serious mode. I asked my dad if he can accept two C’s but even if I did get two C’s I think my dad wouldn’t be so mad at me because I had at least four C’s and from no D’s and two C’s that would be an achievement. All my hard work was a bit of practice for eighth grade, which I heard, is a very tough year. I believe in determination and I think every body should be determined to do there hardest and achieve something I did achieve my football goal and most of my school goal.

The Holocaust

I think it is right to take risks only if friends and maybe relatives help. They still saved the Jews, even though they knew hows risky it was and what the consequences might be. They took risks because there ancestors were protestants. Another interesting fact is if you just accept things the way they are you can definitely not improve. You should always stand up for what you believe in and never give up stand up for it until you have confirmed you victory. If you don't stand up for it the enemy will be the victorious one.

However, the consequences are terrible. You can go to jail, be prosecuted and killed. Prejudice and Bias are usually created when there is already a sense of resentment to the enemy but is helped to grow with the help of propaganda's, ignorance and fear. To over come Prejudice and Bias you need to stop being "Ignorant" and see the enemy. Some people have strong and willing hearts while others don't really care about what happens also known as "Ignorant". An example of ignorant would be "Kotler" from the "Boy In The Striped Pajamas"

I think we should still be learning about the book the Boy In The Striped Pajamas because these things might re-occur. It is also a good book because it is challenging and it also provides plenty of information about the Nazi time and the holocaust. Over all it is a great subject and probabaly the best unit we've took this year.
